Notes from a Crusty Seeker

A New Definition of Evil

[Updated 2/5/17]
From the New York Times
Earlier in the day, at the White House, Mr. Trump shrugged off the sense of anxiety and disarray, suggesting that there had been an orderly rollout. "It's not a Muslim ban, but we were totally prepared," he said. "It's working out very nicely. You see it at the airports, you see it all over."

Imagine:

  • You have risked your life to work for the USA, gone through years of scrutiny, obtained a legal visa, a green card.

  • Bombs exploding around you, you have run for your life, crossed treacherous waters crammed in a precarious boat. You have endured the death of your children, your spouse. You have lived in mud, waiting. For 2 and 3 years, you have answered questions. You have obtained a legal visa.

  • You are a scientist with a job, a student or teacher returning to classes, with a legal visa and green card.

  • You are a 4-month-old girl with two holes in her heart, awaiting a legal tourist visa to obtain emergency life-preserving surgery that you cannot get in your own country; you are an American 5-year-old boy who arrives in an airport only to be ripped away from his parents, handcuffed, and isolated—you are the parents of these little children.

  • You are a permanent resident, returning home after attending your mother's funeral.

  • You have given up everything—quit your job, left your home, been homeless, with the promise that your legal visa has given you entry to a new life.

  • And with a stroke of a pen, a man who not only doesn't know about any of this, but doesn't want to know, is incapable of appreciating nuance, has no interest in learning truth or even listening to his advisors, and denies the existence of the 60,000 people with legal visas who are affected by his pen has virtually ended you—left you locked in an airport, stuck in a place where you may die.

I have now learned a new definition of EVIL. And GOOD—thank you, Judges Ann M. Donnelly and (mainstream Republican) Federal Judge James Robart. [Read the full story, Refugees detained at U.S. Airports.]
